Footprinting is inherently focused on the past and the present. Once a company understand its devalue chain and the magnitude of its environmental footprint, it is time to turn to the future: what are the resource related opportunities and threats for the company? These can be identified by systematically examining the four sources of business impact, plus competition and technology.

Identifying resource related opportunities & threatsThese opportunities and threats can be tangible, with short term financial impact, e.g. cost increases due to rising energy prices, or more intangible and longer term, e.g. an improved reputation, brand strength or employee loyalty resulting from a more sustainable product portfolio. These impacts need to be identified and quantified as much as possible.
